Western Downs farmers eye China export opportunities

Wednesday, 06 April 2016

Western Downs’ agricultural producers will be better informed about one of the world’s fastest growing markets through a series of free forums hosted by Food Leaders Australia (FLA) and supported by natural gas company QGC.

The forums, to be held in Tara, Wandoan and Chinchilla on 26-27 April, will help producers identify and maximise emerging opportunities with Chinese consumers relevant to their businesses.

Topics to be covered include the changing nature of Chinese demand for Australian agricultural products, opportunities for individual businesses, transport and logistics considerations, and e-commerce platforms and their impact on Chinese consumer behaviour.

The forums mark the start of the Western Downs Eastern Opportunities project, a new partnership between FLA and QGC which also aims to provide intensive support for up to 10 companies to further develop their export strategies.

FLA Chief Executive Officer Dr Ben Lyons said the partnership with QGC provides access to producers to support which otherwise can come at a high cost to growing businesses.

“We know that in order for businesses to mobilise and capitalise on the emerging opportunities in Asia they need to get export-ready with up-to-date market information, cultural awareness and business to business contacts,” Dr Lyons said.

“The upcoming free information forums will give participants necessary information to take their exports to the next level.”

Attendees will be invited to participate in an expression of interest process to select up to 10 companies to participate in a trade mission to China later this year and gain expert, tailored coaching and advice to help build their export readiness over the next 12 months.”

QGC Managing Director Tony Nunan, said QGC is helping to develop sustainable regional economies and recognises the importance of a strong agribusiness sector to local communities.

“We look forward to hearing about the success of businesses participating in this new project with FLA,” Mr Nunan said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for agricultural producers looking to grow.”

Speakers at the forum will include TSBE CEO and former China-based trade advocate, Dr Ben Lyons, DB Schenker General Manager Queensland Richard Holy, Hong Kong Trade Development Council Director Bonnie Shek and Efic State Director for SME – QLD & NT Natalie Reid-Frost.
